Case study

Leading frontend delivery for national-scale live streaming

Role: Engineering Team Lead

Context

MEGOGO is one of the largest OTT streaming services in Eastern Europe — live TV, video on demand, and major sports broadcasting across a fragmented landscape of devices.

The problem

Streaming frontends fail in the worst possible moment: during the match everyone tuned in for. The player and apps had to work across web browsers, dozens of Smart TV models, mobile web, and consoles — each with its own performance ceiling — while the organization shipped features continuously.

Constraints

  • Live broadcast events with hard deadlines and massive audience spikes
  • Smart TV hardware with a fraction of desktop performance and unforgiving media stacks
  • A multi-platform codebase evolving under continuous delivery
  • A team to lead, grow, and keep shipping predictably

My role

I led the frontend engineering organization: player and application delivery across all client platforms, release quality, and the engineers themselves — hiring, mentoring, and technical direction.

Approach

Treat the player as the product’s critical path

Playback reliability got engineering priority over feature breadth — a streaming service is judged on whether the stream plays.

Engineer for the weakest device, not the demo machine

Performance targets and testing were anchored to low-end Smart TVs, which forced architectural discipline that benefited every platform.

Make releases boring

Invested in release process and operational readiness for broadcast events, so big matches were routine operations rather than heroics.

Result

  • Player and app delivery for live and VOD streaming at national scale, across web, Smart TV, mobile, and console surfaces.
  • Release reliability that held up during major live broadcast events.
  • A frontend organization that grew in capability while delivery stayed predictable.
